If you have suffered from sexual harassment in the work place, there are several informal things you can do before and/or after you have reported the unwanted behavior:
- Document. After you have suffered from sexual harassment, you should document all behaviors you felt were unwanted. You should take note of who was behaving inappropriately, what they did that was inappropriate, and what you did to try to stop the behaviors. You should also note the date and time of all incidents involving harassment.
- Write a letter to the harasser. Take the time to write a letter or email to the person who is harassing you. Make sure you date the letter and directly state in your letter that you want the behaviors to stop. You should be as direct as possible and let the person know that his/her behavior is very offensive. Keep a copy of this letter for your own records.
- Prepare a letter to your employer. Draft a formal letter to your employer, upper management, or human resources department. In your letter, detail instances of harassment and how it has negatively impacted your work situation. Even if you feel ashamed, you should take the time to put your thoughts into writing and start preparing a letter so that you can report the harassment. Remember, if harassment is not reported, it is likely to continue.
- Talk to others. By talking with others, you may discover that the person who is harassing you has harassed or is currently harassing other people you work with. By learning that you are not alone, you may feel more confident as you prepare to report the harassment.
- Research. Take the time to become more aware of your rights and how sexual harassment violates your rights. Read through your company’s literature to learn how sexual harassment is dealt with internally. If you have questions, seek out a professional who can address your concerns, such as an experienced Employment Law attorney.
